Prayer of Jabez (1Chr 4:10)

Original Prayer

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying: Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!

And God granted what he asked.

Context (Old Covenant)

A prayer from 1 Chronicles 4:10 (Old Testament). Jabez prays in the context of the Old Covenant, under the Law.

What it teaches

Longing for God's blessing; protection; effectiveness.

Realization in the New Covenant

The prayer of Jabez (1Chr 4:10) was spoken under the Old Covenant. Jabez asked God for blessing, because he didn't have it yet. In the New Covenant:

  • You are already blessed with EVERY spiritual blessing (Eph 1:3)
  • Instead of "Oh that you would bless me" you say: "Thank you that I AM blessed"
  • Enlarged borders? In the New Covenant it's about fruit (Gal 5:22), not territory
  • This prayer became popular through a book that turned it into a formula. God is not a vending machine.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you that I am blessed in Christ, with everything I need. Open doors for love and good works. Guide me and protect me from anything that pulls me away from you. I receive from abundance, not from lack. Amen.
