Paul's Prayer: Inner Strength & Love (Eph 3:14-21)

Original Prayer

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,

that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Context (Old Covenant)

Pauline prayer (Eph 3:14-21), pure New Covenant: the inner being strengthened by the Spirit, filled with Christ's love.

What it teaches

In the OT prayer is often for strength, a renewed heart and preservation.

Realization in the New Covenant

Eph 3:14-21 is the most powerful prayer in the New Testament.

  • Paul prays for inner strengthening through the Spirit, that Christ may dwell through faith in your heart, and that you may grasp the immeasurable love of God.
  • The key: God can do "immeasurably more" than you ask or imagine.
  • That is the power at work in you.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, strengthen me through Your Spirit in my inner being. In Christ, let Christ dwell through faith in my heart. Root me in Your love. I receive knowledge of Your breadth, length, height and depth. Fill me with Your fullness. Amen.
