Prayer of Thanks in Scarcity (Hab 3:17-19)

Original Prayer

Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food,

the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls,

yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

GOD, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word of Habakkuk (Hab 3:17-19) from the Old Testament. Already astonishing: joy despite absolute lack. New Covenant deepens this: joy is fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22).

What it teaches

Faith in lack; joy in God.

Realization in the New Covenant

Habakkuk prays under the Old Covenant, but his principle lives on in the New Covenant: trusting God and giving thanks even when circumstances speak against it.

  • New Covenant foundation: You know what Habakkuk did not yet know: God IS for you (Rom 8:31), He HAS blessed you with EVERY spiritual blessing (Eph 1:3)
  • Provision stands: God will supply every need of yours according to His riches (Phil 4:19). Not according to your merit, according to HIS riches
  • Nothing separates: Neither lack nor abundance can separate you from His love (Rom 8:38-39)
  • Thanks, not worry: Trust is not a matter of feelings, but a decision. Say thank you before you see results, that is faith (Heb 11:1)

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, even when things are tight: I hold on to You. In Christ I receive hope and practical provision. I choose to trust. Amen.
