Jesus Prayer (Eastern Church Tradition)
Original Prayer
Context (Old Covenant)
Jesus Prayer from the Eastern Orthodox tradition. Beautiful in form, but "a sinner" can revive Old Covenant identity, in the New Covenant, you are righteousness of God in Christ (2 Cor 5:21).
What it teaches
Focus on Christ; humility; continuity in prayer.
Realization in the New Covenant
The traditional Jesus Prayer ("have mercy on me, a sinner") comes from the Eastern Church and carries Old Covenant language.
- ›In the New Covenant you are no longer a "sinner" but a new creation (2 Cor 5:17), a child of God (John 1:12).
- ›Mercy happened at the cross, you receive it, you do not beg for it. A brief prayer to Jesus is good, but from sonship, not servanthood.
Prayer in the New Covenant
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your mercy at the cross. I align myself with You and receive Your peace. Lead me today in Your love. Amen.
