Prayer Before Worship Service

Original Prayer

Lord, I come to you with an open heart.

Speak to me through your word, your Spirit and my brothers and sisters.

Let me give you space to act.

Amen.

Context (Old Covenant)

Modern prayer before a worship gathering. New Covenant orientation: openness to the Spirit, not religious duty.

What it teaches

Expectation; openness; alignment with God's word.

Realization in the New Covenant

In the New Covenant, a church service is not a place where you seek God, He already dwells IN you (1 Cor 6:19). You bring the Spirit with you when you gather with others.

  • Not a temple, but a body: God does not dwell in buildings, but in you. When believers come together, HE is in their midst (Matt 18:20)
  • Not seeking, but receiving: Your heart is already open. It is about being attentive to what the Spirit wants to do
  • Preparation: Come not with performance, but with gratitude. Everything IS already given (Eph 1:3)
  • Fellowship: Gathering together is encouragement (Heb 10:25), not duty, living stones, not a dead institution (1 Pet 2:5)

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank You that we belong to You. In Christ open our hearts to Your word. Build us up, comfort, correct and strengthen through Your Spirit. Amen.
