Bedtime Prayer for Children (Classic)

Original Prayer

I am tired, I close my eyes, Father, let your eyes be over me.

Did I do wrong today, do not look upon it, dear God; your grace and Jesus' blood make every harm good again.

Amen.

Context (Old Covenant)

Classical child's evening prayer (19th century). Beautiful image, but still partly in Old Covenant logic ("did I do wrong"). Needs adjustment.

What it teaches

Security; gratitude; childlike trust.

Realization in the New Covenant

The classic children's bedtime prayer mixes folk piety with guilt-language.

  • In the New Covenant children do not need an atonement ritual before sleep.
  • God loves them unconditionally.
  • They rest in His peace, not in their performance. A simple prayer of thanks is enough.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank You for this day. Thank You that Jesus loves me. I rest in Your peace. Keep me safe through the night. Amen.
