Psalm 27 (The Lord Is My Light)

Original Prayer

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.

For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.

I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living!

Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

Context (Old Covenant)

Psalm of David from the Old Testament. Confession of trust in YHWH as light and salvation, prayed under the Old Covenant.

What it teaches

Courage; trust; seeking God's presence.

Realization in the New Covenant

Psalm 27 is David's confession: "The Lord is my light and my salvation." In the New Covenant:

  • Jesus SAYS: "I am the light of the world" (Joh 8:12). This is no longer metaphor but someone real.
  • "One thing I ask: to dwell in the Lord's house", Your body IS his house (1Cor 6:19). You dwell with him always.
  • David asked for closeness. You HAVE closeness, the Spirit dwells in you.
  • "Wait for the Lord", In the New Covenant you no longer wait for God to come. He is here.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Jesus, you are my light and my salvation. Thank you that I am accepted in you. I don't have to wait anymore, you are already here. I choose courage and trust today from my identity as your child. Amen.
