Psalm 121 (Help Comes from the Lord)

Original Prayer

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?

My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand.

The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

Context (Old Covenant)

Pilgrim psalm from the Old Testament, expression of trust under the Old Covenant.

What it teaches

God as guardian; protection; trust.

Realization in the New Covenant

Psalm 121 is a pilgrimage song, pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem. In the New Covenant:

  • "Where does my help come from?", The Holy Spirit dwells IN you (1Cor 3:16). Help is not far away, it's in you.
  • You no longer need to travel to Jerusalem. Your body is the temple (1Cor 6:19)
  • "He will not let your foot slip", In Christ you are firmly rooted (Col 2:7)
  • Instead of waiting for help from outside: Live from the power already within you

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you that you are my helper, not somewhere far away, but in me. I receive your protection and guidance today. I don't walk alone; Christ lives in me. Amen.
