The Lord's Prayer (Mt 6:9-13)

Original Prayer

This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.

Amen.

Context (Old Covenant)

Taught by Jesus before the cross. Still in the transition, yet Jesus is already teaching the coming Father-child relationship of the New Covenant (Matt 6).

What it teaches

Alignment with God's name/will; daily dependence; forgiveness; request for guidance and protection.

Realization in the New Covenant

The Lord's Prayer is a teaching prayer Jesus gave BEFORE the cross. His disciples did not yet have free access to the Father. After the cross, everything changed:

  • Identity: You are a child of God, not a petitioner (Joh 1:12; Gal 4:6-7)
  • Forgiveness: Already accomplished once and for all (Heb 10:10-14). You don't need to ask for forgiveness, you thank God that it stands.
  • Provision: In Christ you are blessed with every spiritual blessing (Eph 1:3). Receive instead of beg.
  • "Lead us not into temptation", God tempts no one (Jas 1:13). In the New Covenant we ask for guidance, not for being spared.
  • The Lord's Prayer is a transitional prayer: It shows the direction, but the cross opened the door.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you that in Christ I have free access to you. May your name be honored in my life. I receive provision and wisdom today. Thank you that I am forgiven, I choose to forgive. Guide me by your Spirit and protect me from evil. All glory belongs to you. Amen.
