Lyrics

I see the pictures on the wall The moments I could never let go The roads we walked here hand in hand Step by step we made our stand And as the years start moving slow I wonder what will still hold on What remains when all else falls When only love can count it all I hold on to what can stay When the rest fades away What remains when nothing lasts The courage that can hold us fast I hold on to what can stay When the rest fades away I hear your laughter far away It carries me through the empty night And even if tomorrow hides your face What you've lit in me will still burn bright And as the years start moving slow I wonder what will still hold on What remains when all else falls When only love can count it all I hold on to what can stay When the rest fades away What remains when nothing lasts The courage that can hold us fast I hold on to what can stay When the rest fades away Everything will come and go Still we're standing here In the heart there's always more Than the eye can see What remains when all else falls When only love can count it all I hold on to what can stay When the rest fades away What remains when nothing lasts The courage that can hold us fast I hold on to what can stay When the rest fades away

About this song

1 Corinthians 13:13: "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

Mike's track title "What Remains" closes the album with this question and answer.

In the Greek original: nyní dè ménei pístis, elpís, agápē (νυνὶ δὲ μένει πίστις, ἐλπίς, ἀγάπη). Three remain. Faith, hope, love.

Mike's track is the album's closing confession. After all the tracks, value, falls, steps, lightness, light, knowledge, more-than-here, reading, un-breakability, comes the last statement: what remains is these three.

1 John 4:8: "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." Love is not a quality of God alongside others. He is love. What remains is ultimately he himself.

Mike's sound carries this closing tone quietly, dignified, reverently. The album that opened with a value statement ("Because You Matter") closes with a being-statement ("What Remains"). Both bracket sentences of the son's life, connected through all the stations in between.
