Paul's Prayer: Walk Worthy (Col 1:9-12)

Original Prayer

We have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy.

Context (Old Covenant)

Pauline prayer (Col 1:9-12), New Covenant: walking worthy as fruit of knowing him, not as condition for his love.

What it teaches

OT guidance aims at faithfulness in the covenant. God's way is sought to act rightly.

Realization in the New Covenant

Paul prays: filled with knowledge of God's will, walk worthy, bear fruit, grow, be strengthened.

  • This is not a performance program.
  • The key is at the end: "Giving thanks to the Father, who has QUALIFIED us" (Col 1:12).
  • You are already qualified. You do not qualify yourself, God has done it.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, in Christ fill me with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom. Let me walk worthily, bear fruit and grow in knowledge. Strengthen me for endurance and joy. Thank You that You have qualified me. Amen.
