Prayer for Guarding the Tongue (James 3)

Original Prayer

The tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word of James (Jas 3), New Covenant: control of the tongue through the Spirit, not through self-discipline.

What it teaches

Language shapes life; responsibility.

Realization in the New Covenant

James warns in the New Covenant about the power of words.

  • The tongue is small but mighty.
  • In the New Covenant you have the Spirit who gives self-control (Gal 5:23).
  • You are not at the mercy of your tongue.
  • Words can build up or destroy. You have the choice, and you have the power.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, in Christ guide my words. Let me speak truth without hurting. I receive self-control and grace in my speech. Amen.
