Evening Prayer (Classic: Night Protection)

Original Prayer

I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son,

that you have graciously kept me this day,

and I pray that you would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong,

and graciously keep me this night also.

For into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things.

Let your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me.

Amen.

Context (Old Covenant)

Lutheran evening prayer (16th century). Formulated after the Reformation, but partly still uses Old Covenant language. Needs adjustment.

What it teaches

Gratitude; letting go; trust; rest.

Realization in the New Covenant

Luther's evening prayer asks for forgiveness of the day's sins, as if the cross isn't enough. In the New Covenant:

  • ›Forgiveness stands once and for all (Heb 10:14). You don't need daily confession of sins.
  • ›You are safe in Christ, not because an angel stands guard, but because God lives in you (1Cor 3:16)
  • ›Nothing can separate you from God's love (Rom 8:38-39)
  • ›Evening prayer in the New Covenant: Gratitude, receiving rest, laying down cares (1Pet 5:7)

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you for this day. I lay all worries in your hands. Thank you that I am safe in Christ, not through rituals but through your finished work. I receive your peace and rest in your love. Nothing can separate me from you. Amen.
