Aaronic Blessing (Num 6:24-26)

Original Prayer

The LORD bless you and keep you;

the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;

the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Context (Old Covenant)

A prayer from the context of the Old Covenant, before its fulfillment in Christ.

What it teaches

Declaration of God's goodwill, grace, and peace.

Realization in the New Covenant

The Aaronic Blessing comes from the Old Covenant (Num 6). There a priest spoke the blessing over the people. In the New Covenant, this has fundamentally changed:

  • You no longer need a priest, Jesus is the only mediator (1Tim 2:5)
  • You are already blessed with EVERY spiritual blessing (Eph 1:3), the blessing stands firm
  • God's face shines upon you, not because you deserve it, but because you are in Christ
  • Instead of "The Lord MAY bless you" it says: "You ARE blessed" (Eph 1:3)

Prayer in the New Covenant

I receive in Christ blessing, grace, and peace. God's face shines upon me, not because I deserve it, but because I am his child. Thank you, Father, that I live in your acceptance. Amen.
