Prayer for Comfort (2Cor 1:3-4)

Original Prayer

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word from Paul (2 Cor 1:3-4). New Covenant: God comforts us in Christ, and through us comforts others.

What it teaches

God comforts and enables us to comfort others.

Realization in the New Covenant

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 is a New Covenant statement: God comforts us so we can comfort others.

  • Comfort is not abstract, the Holy Spirit (Parakletos = Comforter) dwells in you (Joh 14:16-17)
  • God doesn't comfort only on request. He IS the God of all comfort.
  • In the New Covenant: You receive comfort and pass it on. A cycle of grace.
  • Not "God, please comfort me", but: "Thank you for comforting me. Make me a channel."

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you for comforting me, through your Spirit in me. Touch my heart with your nearness. Enable me to comfort others with the comfort I receive. Amen.
