Prayer for Healing (Jas 5:14-16)

Original Prayer

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word from James (Jas 5:14-16), full New Covenant practice: healing through prayer, anointing and confession in community.

What it teaches

Fellowship; intercession; trust in God's action.

Realization in the New Covenant

James 5:14-16 teaches about prayer for the sick in the community. In the New Covenant:

  • Healing is part of the finished work: "By his wounds you have been healed" (1Pet 2:24)
  • The prayer of faith saves the sick, not a ritual, but authority in Christ
  • You speak in Jesus' name with authority (Mk 16:17-18; Lk 10:19)
  • "Confess your sins to one another", Not as confession ritual, but as honest community. Forgiveness already stands.
  • Receive healing, don't hope for it. Speak, don't beg.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you for Jesus' finished work. In the name of Jesus I speak healing and restoration. Pain, inflammation, and weakness must go. Body, align and function in health. I receive life and strength through the Holy Spirit. Amen.
