Context (Old Covenant)
Invitation of Jesus (Matt 11:28-30). Spoken before the cross, but already an opening into the New Covenant: rest in him.
What it teaches
Invitation to rest; Jesus' yoke; gentleness.
Realization in the New Covenant
Jesus speaks this invitation BEFORE the cross, but it already shows the reality of the New Covenant:
- ›"Come to me", Jesus invites, not as a teacher with rules, but as redeemer
- ›"My yoke is easy", In contrast to the yoke of the law that no one could bear (Acts 15:10)
- ›In the New Covenant: You're not overburdened because God demands more. You're invited to LAY DOWN burdens.
- ›Rest is not something you earn first. It's a gift in Christ (Heb 4:9-10)
Prayer in the New Covenant
Jesus, thank you for your invitation. I come to you and lay down burdens. I receive your rest, light and good. Teach me your ways and I walk in your strength, not my own. Amen.
