Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)

Original Prayer

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.

Context (Old Covenant)

From John 1:29 (John the Baptist about Jesus). Pure New Covenant statement, Jesus has already taken away the sin of the world. The plea "have mercy" should rather be: gratitude that it is already done.

What it teaches

Christ-centeredness; remembrance of Jesus' sacrifice; peace.

Realization in the New Covenant

The Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is based on John 1:29. Jesus IS the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. In the New Covenant:

  • "Have mercy on us", The mercy has happened! The Lamb was slain, sin is taken away (Joh 1:29)
  • You don't ask for something that has already happened. You receive and give thanks.
  • "Give us your peace", Peace is already given (Joh 14:27). Accept it!
  • The song of redemption has shifted from asking to thanking

Prayer in the New Covenant

Jesus, Lamb of God, thank you for taking away the sin of the world, once and for all. Your mercy stands firm. I receive your peace and live from your grace. Amen.
