Colossians 3:12
Identity Shapes Behavior
Verse
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.
Thought
God's chosen ones, holy and beloved. Note: Paul is not describing what you should become but what you are. You are chosen, you are holy, you are loved. From this identity you may put on qualities like clothing: compassion, kindness, humility.
In the New Covenant, behavior is not the condition for identity but the fruit of it. You don't put on gentleness to become holy. You put it on because you are.
Today: Live from what you are, not for what you want to become.
Truth & Application
Truth: You are already chosen, holy, and loved. The qualities Paul lists are expressions of your identity, not the path to it. You don't live FOR acceptance but FROM acceptance.
Today practically: Choose one quality today: compassion, kindness, or patience. Live it as an expression of who you are in Christ.
Question for you: Are you living from your identity or for your identity?
Prayer
Father, thank you that I am chosen, holy, and loved. Today I live from that identity. I put on compassion, kindness, and patience, not to become but because I am. Holy Spirit, let my identity shape my actions today. Amen.
