Israel & the New Covenant

Israel has a special place in salvation history. But 'New Covenant' means: Christ has changed everything, for everyone.

The topic of Israel is emotionally charged — politically, theologically, personally. Many believers feel a deep connection to Israel. Others are unsure how to understand the biblical promises to Israel today. And some use “Israel” as a theological weapon. Let's look at this soberly and honestly.

Covenant — Not Contract: Understanding the Foundation

Before we talk about Israel, we need to clarify something fundamental. God is a covenant God. Not a contract God. And the difference is monumental — as explained in the marriage article.

The covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15 is one of the most powerful texts in the Bible. Watch what happens:

“When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.”

— Genesis 15:17

The animal halves were laid out. In a covenant, BOTH parties would walk through — as a sign: “If I break this covenant, may it be done to me as to these animals.”

But what happened? Abraham was asleep. (Genesis 15:12: “a deep sleep fell on Abram”). Only GOD passed through — as a smoking fire pot and flaming torch. God sealed the covenant alone. God bore the responsibility alone. Abraham didn't have to do ANYTHING.

That is covenant. Not contract. No “if you, then I.” But: I promise. I carry. I hold. No matter what you do. — And EXACTLY so is the New Covenant in Christ. God alone sealed it and bore it — at the cross.

Ever thought about this?

Abraham didn't CO-seal the covenant with God. He was asleep. God walked between the animal halves ALONE. That means: God alone carries the covenant. God alone upholds it. And if the covenant is broken — God alone pays the price. He did. At the cross. THAT is grace: Not that you do enough — but that he has done EVERYTHING.

Israel in the Old Covenant

God chose Israel — as the people through whom the Messiah would come. The promises to Abraham, the deliverance from Egypt, the law at Sinai, the land — all of it was part of God's plan. And that plan was good.

But — and many forget this — the Old Covenant was always intended as a transition. It was the shadow, not the substance. The veil, not the Holy of Holies.

“In speaking of a ‘new’ covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”

— Hebrews 8:13

First Mention: Global From the Start

The Biblical Line

Genesis 12:1-3 — “In you all families of the earth shall be blessed.” From the very beginning the plan was GLOBAL, not exclusive. Abraham was not blessed SO THAT Israel would have a special position — but so that through him ALL would be blessed.

Jeremiah 31:31-33 — “I will make a new covenant — not like the old one.” God himself announces the end of the old system.
Galatians 3:28-29 — “There is neither Jew nor Greek… you are Abraham's offspring.” In the New Covenant, origin doesn't matter — faith does.
Hebrews 8:13 — “In speaking of a ‘new’ covenant, he makes the first one obsolete.”

The line: From Abraham's universal blessing through Israel's special path to fulfillment in Christ — the New Covenant is not an extension of the old. It is its fulfillment and replacement.

“Israel” = God-Wrestler — A Spiritual Identity

The Hebrew word Yisrael (יִשְׂרָאֵל) means “he who wrestles with God” or “God-wrestler.” Jacob received this name after wrestling with God all night (Genesis 32:28).

This is not a nation-state. It's a spiritual identity. And in the New Covenant, ALL who wrestle with God, who seek his face, who won't let go — are “Israel.” Not by bloodline. By faith.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.”

— Galatians 3:28-29

In the New Covenant, ethnic identity is meaningless for standing before God. Not Jew or Greek. Not male or female. Not slave or free. ALL one in Christ. ALL Abraham's offspring — through faith, not through DNA.

Romans 9-11 — In Context

Paul grieves over Israel in Romans 9-11. Genuinely. Deeply. He would let himself be cursed if it would help his kinsmen (Romans 9:3). That grief is real.

BUT — Paul does NOT preach two paths. He preaches ONE path: Christ. And in Romans 9:6 he makes something crucial clear:

“For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel.”

— Romans 9:6

Paul himself distinguishes between ethnic Israel and spiritual Israel. The promise goes to those who are in Christ — regardless of bloodline. This is not antisemitism — this is Paul, a Hebrew of Hebrews, a Pharisee from the tribe of Benjamin.

Ever thought about this?

Why does Christianity sell trips to the “Holy Land” — when YOU are the temple (1 Corinthians 6:19)? The holiest place is not Jerusalem. The holiest place is not the Western Wall. The holiest place is IN YOU. God does not dwell in buildings made of stone (Acts 7:48). He dwells in YOU.

Dispensationalism — A Critical Examination

The idea that God has two different plans — one for Israel, one for the “Church” — is called dispensationalism. This teaching comes from John Nelson Darby (19th century) and was unknown for the first 1,800 years of church history.

It has no New Testament foundation. The book of Hebrews is CLEAR:

“In speaking of a ‘new’ covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”

— Hebrews 8:13

Not “supplemented.” Not “updated.” Not “paused.” Obsolete. Ready to vanish.

Many end-times scenarios (rapture, 7-year tribulation, Third Temple) are based on dispensationalism. They are neither ancient nor self-evident nor biblical. The New Covenant demands: Test everything. Even popular teachings. Even bestsellers. Even what “everyone believes.”

The Modern State of Israel

The State of Israel, founded in 1948, is a political entity — not automatically identical with biblical Israel. Many believers equate the two and derive unconditional political support from it. But the Bible nowhere demands uncritical support of a modern state.

You can view Israel critically — politically — without being “against God.” You can name Palestinian suffering without relativizing the Holocaust. You can differentiate. That is not antisemitism — that is the capacity for nuance.

Love Without Blindness

Yes, respect the Jewish roots of your faith. Yes, fight antisemitism. But do it with open eyes — not with a theology that confuses a modern state with biblical prophecy and ignores the suffering of others in the process.

The New Covenant is for everyone. Jew and Gentile. Israeli and Palestinian. Because at the cross, every dividing wall fell — including the ones we sometimes want to rebuild.

The Truth About Israel and the New Covenant

God is a covenant God. His covenant with Abraham was ONE-SIDED — God walked between the animal halves alone, Abraham slept. “Israel” (יִשְׂרָאֵל) means “God-wrestler” — a spiritual identity, not a passport. In the New Covenant there is neither Jew nor Greek — all are ONE in Christ, all Abraham's heirs through faith. Hebrews declares the Old Covenant obsolete. There are not two plans — there is ONE way: Christ.

The holiest place is not Jerusalem. It's in you. Because YOU are the temple. And God does not dwell in buildings of stone — he dwells in his people. In you.
