Food, Body, Temple

Your body is not your enemy. It's your home on this earth, and it deserves respect, not contempt.

“Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit” — this verse gets used in churches for everything: against smoking, against tattoos, against fast food, against too much wine. But what does Paul actually mean? And what does it mean for your everyday life?

Temple — Not Prison

In Greek philosophy, the body was a prison of the soul. In Christianity, this unfortunately stuck: The body is “fleshly,” “sinful,” something to be overcome. But that's Gnosticism, not the gospel.

God created the body. Jesus had a body. The risen Christ has a body. The body is not the problem — it's part of the plan.

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you?”

— 1 Corinthians 6:19

Temple — that means: God lives here. Not “God wants out.” Your body is holy ground, not enemy territory.

First Mention of Food — The Biblical Line

Watch how God's instruction about food develops — and how the New Covenant changes everything:

The Biblical Line

Genesis 1:29 — “I have given you every plant yielding seed.” The first food: plants. No meat, no rules, no prohibitions.

Genesis 9:3 — After the flood: “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you.” Meat is permitted.
Leviticus 11 — Under the law: clean and unclean. Complex dietary rules.
Mark 7:19 — Jesus declared all foods clean.
1 Timothy 4:4 — “Everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.”

The line: From plants through dietary laws to total freedom — but with the invitation to honor the body as a temple. No rules, but awareness.

Eating Without Fear

Under the Old Covenant there were dietary laws: clean and unclean. In the New Covenant, Jesus abolished them:

“It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth.”

— Matthew 15:11

You are free to eat what you want. No food makes you “unclean” or “unspiritual.” But freedom also means responsibility: Taking good care of your body is not a religious duty — it's an expression of gratitude.

Ever thought about this?

No food is “unclean” in the New Covenant. Jesus made that clear (Mark 7:19). Your body is a temple — but temples don't become holy through diets. Neither veganism nor paleo nor fasting makes you more spiritual. And chocolate doesn't make you less spiritual. Eat mindfully, enjoy gratefully — done.

Pharmakeia (φαρμακεία) — A Word That Should Wake You Up

Now it gets uncomfortable. The Greek word pharmakeia (φαρμακεία) appears multiple times in the Bible:

“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery [pharmakeia]…”

— Galatians 5:19-20

“For by your sorcery [pharmakeia] all nations were deceived.”

— Revelation 18:23

“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers [pharmakeus]… their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur.”

— Revelation 21:8

Pharmakeia — translated as “sorcery.” From this word derives: pharmacy. Pharmaceutical. Pharma industry. Same word. Same root.

This doesn't mean every pill is sin. But it does mean: The Bible warns of a SYSTEM that seduces people through substances, creates dependency, and cuts them off from the true source of healing. And the system that today calls itself “healthcare” at least deserves the question: Who does it really serve?

Ever thought about this?

The word “pharmacy” comes from “pharmakeia” (φαρμακεία) = sorcery. The Bible explicitly warns against it (Galatians 5:20; Revelation 18:23; 21:8). And we call it “healthcare.” Three Bible passages. Same Greek word. Maybe worth a closer look.

Jehovah Rapha — I AM Your Healer

God introduces himself in Exodus 15:26:

“For I am the LORD, your healer.”

— Exodus 15:26 (Jehovah Rapha / יְהוָה רֹפְאֶךָ)

GOD is the healer. Not the system. Not the industry. Not chemicals. GOD. This is not a metaphor — it's a name revelation. God reveals himself as healer. That's his NATURE.

“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”

— Romans 8:11

The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells IN YOU. And he gives life to your mortal body. Healing comes from the Spirit — not from chemistry. This isn't a pious phrase — it's spiritual physics.

Diagnoses Are Not Identity

“I AM depressed.” “I HAVE an anxiety disorder.” “I AM chronically ill.”

Listen carefully. These are labels. Tags. Categories. And the system LOVES labels — because labels create customers. If you have a label, you need treatment. If you need treatment, you pay.

But YOU are not a diagnosis. You are a new creation:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Depression,” “anxiety disorder,” “burnout” — these are descriptions of SYMPTOMS. Not your identity. Your identity is: son or daughter of the living God. New creation. Temple of the Holy Spirit. THAT is who you are. No label changes that.

Ever thought about this?

The system gives you a label. Then a treatment. Then a medication. Then another one. And suddenly you ARE your diagnosis. But 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: You are a NEW CREATION. The old has passed away. Including the label. Including the category. Including the identity the system wants to give you.

Body Image and Self-Acceptance

Social media shows you bodies daily that don't actually exist — edited, filtered, staged. And even in churches there are unspoken standards: Well-groomed, slim, “presentable.”

Your body is not a project you need to optimize. It's your tool, your expression, your home. Whether thin or heavy, fit or not, healthy or sick — you are loved in it. Not because of, not despite — simply loved.

Movement, Rest, Balance

Exercise is not a spiritual requirement. But movement is good — for body and soul. Not as self-optimization, but as care. Just like sleep, fresh air, good food.

Finding the balance between care and obsession is the art. When nutrition or fitness become idols — when they dominate your thinking — the balance is lost. And an idol remains an idol, even when it's called “healthy.”

Sickness and the Body

When your body is sick, it is no less a “temple.” A sick temple is still holy. God doesn't only dwell in healthy bodies. He dwells in yours — exactly as it is right now.

And don't forget: The Spirit who dwells in you also gives life to your mortal body (Romans 8:11). This is not a contract with fine print — it's a covenant promise. Your Father has revealed himself as YOUR HEALER. Not as a referral to other doctors — as your healer. Jehovah Rapha.

The Truth About Your Body

Your body is temple — not prison. God dwells in it. The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in YOU and gives life to your mortal body. Pharmakeia (φαρμακεία) means sorcery — and that's where “pharmacy” comes from. God is your healer (Jehovah Rapha). Diagnoses are labels — not your identity. And no food makes you unclean in the New Covenant.

You are a new creation. Your body is honorable. Your healer is Jehovah Rapha. And his Spirit in you is stronger than any diagnosis.
