Faith and works. Contradiction or balance?
Faith & works, contradiction or balance? Paul vs. James?
1. The apparent contradiction
Paul says:
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
, Ephesians 2:8-9
James says:
"So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
, James 2:17
⚔️ Sounds like a contradiction, right? But:
The two are talking about two completely different kinds of "works."
2. Two kinds of "works"
Paul warns against dead works ➡️ that is, religious achievements, legal obedience out of duty or pride.
He says: you cannot save yourself by performance, only through trust in Christ.
James warns against dead faith ➡️ that is, a mere lip confession without fruit.
He says: real faith always shows itself in action, it does not remain theory.
3. The biblical balance
Both apostles agree: works do not save, but
real faith is never alone.
"A good tree bears good fruit."
, Matthew 7:17
Faith is the root, works are the fruit.
If there is no fruit, perhaps there was never a real root.
4. The role of works in the New Covenant
a) Works of the law?
- No.
"No one is justified by works of the law."
, Galatians 2:16
b) Works as a response to grace?
- Yes!
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
, Ephesians 2:10
Works are not the means of salvation, but the consequence of salvation.
5. What are these works concretely?
Living love. Doing good where no one sees. Sharing, helping, encouraging. Being sincere, serving, praying. Following, even when it is hard. Telling the truth, even when it costs.
Not as evidence. But out of an inner drive, because you believe and love.
6. An example: Abraham
James 2 brings Abraham as an example:
"Was not Abraham our father justified by works ...?"
, James 2:21
But Paul says:
"Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness."
, Romans 4:3
Both mean the same:
God saw Abraham's heart, the faith.
People saw his actions, the work. The works do not prove faith before God, but they show faith before the world.
7. Conclusion:
There is no contradiction between Paul and James, only an immature reading makes them an opposite. Paul says: you are saved through faith, not through performance. James says: your faith becomes visible, through your life. ➡️ No works = no living faith. ➡️ Good works = natural consequence of real faith. Main question answered:
What saves me, faith or works? Answer:
Faith saves, works confirm.
"Faith works through love."
, Galatians 5:6
Whoever believes, loves. Whoever loves, acts. Whoever acts out of love, has understood.
