Praying in Jesus' Name (John 14:13-14 / 16:23-24)

Original Prayer

Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word of Jesus (John 14:13-14 / 16:23-24), New Covenant: praying in Jesus' name is praying in his identity and authority, not as magic formula.

What it teaches

Prayer is petition and relationship. In the OT often: distance, priest/sacrifice/temple as framework.

Realization in the New Covenant

"In the name of Jesus" is not a magic formula at the end of a prayer, but authority and power. You come not in your own name, but in the name that is above every name (Phil 2:9-11).

  • Authority: All authority has been given to Jesus (Matt 28:18), and He has delegated it to YOU (Luke 10:19)
  • Free access: You have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him (Eph 3:12). The throne of grace stands open (Heb 4:16)
  • Receive, not beg: "Whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you" (John 16:23), that is receiving language, not a lottery
  • Not a formula: It is about the RELATIONSHIP behind the name. A son speaks in the Father's name because he belongs to the household, not because he knows a magic spell

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, I come in Jesus' name. In Christ I have free access. I receive what I need and act on Your commission. Your name is honored. Amen.
