Prayer for Strength in Battle (Eph 6:10-18)

Original Prayer

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word from Paul (Eph 6:10-18). Pure New Covenant: armor and strength come from Christ, no longer through the Law.

What it teaches

Sobriety; standing firm; truth; faith; the Word of God.

Realization in the New Covenant

Ephesians 6 is a clear New Covenant teaching on spiritual warfare. Important:

  • You don't fight FOR victory but FROM victory (Col 2:15, Christ has already won)
  • The armor is your identity: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, God's word
  • "Be strong in the Lord", Strength comes not from you but from Christ in you (Phil 4:13)
  • "Pray at all times in the Spirit", The Holy Spirit prays through you (Rom 8:26)
  • You're not defending a position, you already stand in Christ. You hold the ground.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you that victory in Christ already stands. I stand in the truth of my identity, receive righteousness and peace. I take up faith as a shield and your word as a sword. Your Spirit prays through me. I stand firm. Amen.
