Prayer for Wisdom (Jas 1:5)

Original Prayer

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word from the letter of James (Jas 1:5-6), already New Covenant teaching: ask the Father directly for wisdom.

What it teaches

Invitation to ask for wisdom; trust.

Realization in the New Covenant

James 1:5 is a clear New Covenant statement: God gives wisdom generously and without reproach. Here's the difference:

  • No begging, God WANTS to give you (Jas 1:5)
  • No reproach, God doesn't hold it against you that you need to ask
  • The key is faith, not worthiness. You receive because you are a child, not because you deserve it.
  • The Holy Spirit in you IS wisdom (1Cor 2:10-16). He teaches you from within.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you: You give wisdom generously and without reproach. I receive wisdom now, for this situation, for this decision. Indecision gives way. I act in faith. Amen.
