Fasting in the New Covenant (Matt 6:16-18 / Acts 13:2-3)

Original Prayer

And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said: Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word of Jesus (Matt 6:16-18) and the early church (Acts 13:2-3), New Covenant: fasting as turning toward the Father, not as performance.

What it teaches

In the OT fasting shows humility, marks repentance or seeks special help.

Realization in the New Covenant

Fasting in the New Covenant is alignment, not leverage (Matt 6:16-18). You do not fast to impress God or to earn something.

  • Jesus teaches: fast in secret, without show.
  • In Acts, believers fast to align themselves with God's voice (Acts 13:2-3). It is about focus, not merit.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, in Christ I fast to realign my heart with You. Thank You that I do not need to earn anything. Speak clearly to me, order my priorities and I receive wisdom for the next steps. Let me act in love. Amen.
