Prayer for the City / Leaders (1Tim 2:1-2)

Original Prayer

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,

for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word of Paul (1 Tim 2:1-2), New Covenant: intercession for rulers, not subservience but spiritual responsibility.

What it teaches

Prayer as responsibility; peace for good living.

Realization in the New Covenant

1 Timothy 2:1-2 is a New Covenant instruction: Pray for all people, including those in authority.

  • Intercession is a New Covenant task of God's sons and daughters
  • The goal: Space for the gospel, not political power
  • You pray not as a subject but as God's child with authority
  • 1Tim 2:5: "One mediator between God and mankind: the man Christ Jesus", No other mediator needed

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, I pray for leaders in my city and country. Give them wisdom and justice. Protect people from abuse of power. Create space for peace and for the gospel. Amen.
