Prayer in Anxiety (Phil 4:6-7)

Original Prayer

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Context (Old Covenant)

Word from Paul (Phil 4:6-7). Pure New Covenant promise: peace in Christ instead of anxiety.

What it teaches

Anxiety turns to prayer; God's peace protects.

Realization in the New Covenant

Philippians 4:6-7 is a New Covenant instruction: Do not worry about anything, but bring everything before God WITH thanksgiving. The key:

  • Not "please, please, help me", but: Bring your concerns before God AND give thanks
  • God's peace guards your heart, it's not something you earn (Phil 4:7)
  • In Christ you already have peace (Joh 16:33). You receive what is already there.
  • Anxiety is real, but not your identity. You have a spirit of power and sound mind (2Tim 1:7)

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, I bring you this worry, with thanksgiving. Thank you that you are near and won't let me down. I receive your peace that guards my heart and mind, in Christ. Anxiety is not my identity. Amen.
