Psalm 46 (God Is Our Refuge)

Original Prayer

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.

The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Context (Old Covenant)

Psalm of Korah from the Old Testament. Confession of trust in YHWH as fortress and refuge.

What it teaches

Steadfastness in crises; trust; God's presence.

Realization in the New Covenant

Psalm 46 speaks of God as refuge and strength. In the New Covenant this goes deeper:

  • "God is in her midst", He is not just "in the midst" of the assembly, he is IN you (1Cor 3:16)
  • "Be still and know that I am God", Rest is not something you seek, it's something you HAVE in Christ (Mt 11:28-30)
  • God's peace does not depend on circumstances (Phil 4:7)
  • You are not a spectator of God's work, you partake of his divine nature (2Pet 1:4)

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank you that you are my refuge. I receive rest in the middle of the storm. Your presence carries me, in Christ I am safe and firmly grounded. Amen.
