Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy)

Original Prayer

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts;

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Context (Old Covenant)

Combination of Isaiah 6:3 (Old Testament vision of the Most Holy One) and Matthew 21:9 (welcome of Jesus). Liturgical bridge between Old and New Covenant.

What it teaches

God's holiness; awe; worship.

Realization in the New Covenant

The Sanctus is based on Isaiah 6:3 (OT) and expresses reverence before God's holiness. In the New Covenant:

  • You may approach God, the veil is torn (Mt 27:51; Heb 10:19-22)
  • Reverence yes, but not fear. You are God's child, not his subject (Rom 8:15)
  • "Fill me with your Spirit", You are already filled (Eph 5:18). Live from it!
  • Holiness is your identity in Christ (1Cor 1:2), not a goal you must achieve

Prayer in the New Covenant

Holy God, I honor you. Thank you that in Christ I may draw near, the veil is torn. Your Spirit lives in me. Let my life reflect you, from identity, not from effort. Amen.
